Seniors are at a high risk for dehydration because their ability to conserve water is actually reduced. In addition, it is more difficult for them to recognize thirst and they are less able to respond to temperature changes. When these natural changes are compounded with other factors such as hot weather or chronic illness such as dementia, dehydration can become more severe.
We know that staying hydrated is a key component to healthy aging, but sometimes drinking plain water can get boring. Encourage your residents to stay hydrated in the warmer weather by making your own infused water.
